What is the point of celebrating birthdays?

Question

What is the point of celebrating birthdays?
I know its the date when one was born and signifies the turning of age, but I dont think it justifies the need to celebrate. Is there any significant purpose in celebrating birthdays? Or is it a commersialised occasion to make money?

Answer

I have never understood the concept of celebrating birthdays. It seems that people need a reason to feel special when what they dont understand is that they already are.brbrPersonally, I celebrate every day that I wake up and still have my faculties in tact. I dont need some arbitrary number on an insignificant piece of paper to be glad to be alive. To me, celebrating a birthday is nothing more than selfindulgent, selfabsorbed nonsense. You are celebrating a day that you dont remember, and has no other meaning than it is the point in Earths orbit around the sun that you happen to have emerged from the womb. WOO HOO! Like it was your doing.brbrIf people spent as much time feeding their minds and souls as they do partying and primping and otherwise distracting themselves from whats important, this world might actually be a better place.
